True TJ about whatever gremlins may await me, but I never seem to keep my cars long enough to find out. The longest I have ever had a car was my 1978 Rabbit champagne edition from college, had it 6 years. I have been known to trade a car in as soon as 6 weeks (and trust me I have suffered $$$). The car that came in second (as far as ownership length) was my 2002 911 Carrera at 3 years.
I have been trying to sell a friend's 1995 BMW 840Ci for a year now, but no takers. At 81,000 miles and 13 years old, it is still surprisingly tight and looking over the receipts, I don't see much in the way of excessive maintenance. Plus this car has A LOT that can go wrong.
The new 2007 Aero vert I was going to buy would have run me $37,000 with fees. The 2008 BMW ran me $46,000 with fees. To get a comparably equipped 2008 Aero vert, even with incentives, would have run about $44,500 with fees, so I didn't pay that much more, although I could easily have with added options. The next most affordable BMW on the large dealer lot I bought at had an MSRP of $50,500 and they went WAY up to $60k+ from there (If you don't count the $80k M3). As I mentioned before, in the future I will wander the used Saab lot vs the new showroom. They are a much better deal.
I think it's all about buying smart, but I totally agree with the spoiled high schoolers but not much of a contrast from my late 70's prep school parking lot full of Trans Ams, Z28's, 280Z's, Fiats, Sciroccos and TR6's (doesn't that take you back?).
Other than our VW Eos, I have never gotten stopped by so many people wanting a closer look at the bimmer. I actually had a cop walk up to me and tell me, "I was going to give you a ticket...for not leaving the keys in the car". Corny yes, but how often will a cop compliment you on your car? I got stopped 10 minutes after I bought the 06 Aero for speeding and no proof of insurance for that car (yes, he expected me to have it 10 minutes after I picked up the car). And yes, he gave me the ticket for no insurance but let me off for speeding.
Saab still exists in my heart, but I don't automatically default any more.
