Ive been working at SAAB dealers since 1994 and have also owned several classic SAABs (95 ((not 9-5)), Sonett's, 99's and classic 900). The ecotec motor used in the SAAB 9-3 sport sedans In my opinion is probably the most reliable engine SAAB has ever used.
When I went to SAAB training on this motor, we were told that SAAB was forced by GM to use the global Ecotec motor. So the SAAB engineers kept the block and cylinder head and threw out all of the other parts and started from scratch, engineering it the way they wanted it. And of coarse turbocharging it. I don't know if the story is true or not, but it sounds good.
And what is a "Venerable saab engine"? One of my 95's had a 3cyl 2 stroke engine. My other 95 and my Sonett's had a V-4 engine built by FORD. On of my 99's had a 4 cyl engine built by Triumph the other 99 was a SAAB engine that was based on the Triumph engine (SAAB had a better cyl head design). The new generation 900 (1994-1998), 9000 and 9-5 have a GM european V-6 (2.5 & 3.0 liters) that was also used in Opels and Vauxhall. The new 9-3 Aero has a 2.8 liter GM global V-6 that was built in Austrailia.
