5 speed vs 6 speed fuel economy : data points ! Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Tue, 17 Sep 2013 16:57:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
Yesterday, Honey took her car (2008 9-3 V6T, XWD, MT6) for a 600 km (375 miles) run on the highway. Normally, at a steady 120 km/h (75 mph), this car burns around 9 L/100km (26 mpg). Her ride for the day was 520 km on the highway, and 30 km in town.
But yesterday, when she filled it on the way back home, the data was disapointing : only 450 km for 50 liters which translates to 11 L/100km, or 21 mpg.
So last night, I was wondering "what's wrong with that car ?" Bad coils ? Cheap gas ? Deflated tires ?
Well, it seems the answer is none of the above, and much simpler.
Honey, who drives 5-speed manual cars since forever, just forgot her new Saab was a 6-speed. She drove all the way up to Quebec City and all the way back to Montreal in 5 th !
This is probably the main reason for the bad fuel economy. The car doesn't show a CEL, she always fuel it with Premium (91), the tires are new Pilot HX and were filled-up last week to the maximum pressure allowed (36 psi).
So, I always wondered if that 6th speed was indeed a good thing. The answer is yes.
