I find this fuel mileage difference hard to believe. I've often wondered what the affect would be, but, in fifth gear the engine is doing about 20 percent more revs per mile than in sixth. .85 vs .71 ratios. Your numbers would be consistent with about 25 percent more fuel usage. But, with the lower gear ratio, the cars drag should require less torque per engine revolution, and that should require less fuel per revolution. I've assumed that in net you'd use more fuel, but 25 percent more seems unlikely.
However, I suggest that maybe she did the trip mostly in fourth gear. Fourth gear, back and to the right, just not the hard right, is in the same position on the stick as 5th gear on a Saab 5-speed. I've often found myself in 4th when I though I was in 6th, and only glancing at the tach catches my oversight. In sixth gear, the engine is doing about 48 percent more revs per mile. This might sensibly be consistent with 25 percent worse fuel economy. I think the engine would be doing a little less than 4k rpm at 75 mph, and, my own car (an 06 Aero) is reasonably quiet at that engine speed.
Hopefully someone else will have some hard data on mileage differences.
