If you can get a low drain pan under the area, you can just loosen the thermostat cover and let it drain out. It's difficult to be fast enough to minimize the loss of coolant since you want to be sure everything goes back without leaking.
It's rare here that the NG9-3 set that code compared to the old 9-3 and 9-5. What brand thermostat did you get?
Since it is a GM thermostat you can probably get the genuine without breaking the bank.
Take a close look at the two small pipes from expansion tank and maybe replace the tank if they look weathered.
