I could be the ECU (engine control unit), as the mechanic said - it's a typical failure for 4 cylinder gasoline, but hard to say exactly not diagnosing the car. ECU could be swapped for a good used one, but it needs programming.
As for towing - you have to follow car manual. Usually cars with automatic transmission shouldn't be towed for a long distance without engine running due to overheating. I would call a tow truck, as the brakes and steering without power assist are quite hard to operate.
