I bought an '06 9-3 Arc (5 speed and 201K) and was told the fuel gauge has been reading empty for the last 1.5 years. I bought a new sender (AC Delco 19418353) and shortly thereafter decided to replace the pump too so I bought a Hella unit from Eeuro. The new pump/sender went in with no issue but the gauge still read empty. Using the WIS, I disconnected the 10 pin connector (H10-3) and tried contact cleaner but no improvement. The tank has about 7 - 8 gallons in it and the sensor reads 94 ohms. I made some jumpers and connected in my new sender hoping to simulate fuel level. The gauge did not respond. The new sender shows 35 - 250 ohms from empty to full. I borrowed an OBD reader from Autozone and it showed no errors. The SID does show Stability Control Failure but nothing else. After the OBD read, the gauge still showed empty. I started the car and the fuel gauge began to respond showing anywhere from 1/4 to just under 1/2 to almost 3/4. Pressing the Night Panel and the gauge would drop to zero and then return to its previous level. Just under 1/2 tank is likely correct but the gauge response is not consistent and why does starting make it respond? Eeuro told me it might take 2 - 3 tank fills for the correct operation. Will a Tech 2 checkout help this? Could this be a failure of the stepper motor in the gauge cluster? Also wondering why doesn't the insertion of my new sender generate any response? Thanks.
