My local discount auto parts store didn't have the longer PF56 filter. I grabbed my usual PF53, opened the box to make sure the filter was the correct one and had the rubber sealing ring (result of an old bad experience), and stopped dead in my tracks!
The PF53 has recently been redesigned. Whereas the old top plate was flush with the top of the canister, the new style top plate is deeply dished. So deep that the available space for media has been reduced! The media which is visible by viewing through the top hole appears to have shallower and more widely spaced pleats than the previous design. My overall impression was that AC is in a race with Fram towards the bottom of the filter ratings.
I bought the Mobil-1 equivalent. Looks like our choices of acceptable oil filters has been reduced by one.
