Keep in mind we're talking about protection, right? Not fuel economy. Not cold starts. Not historical anecdotes like "well, I've always used Panther Paws Premium Petroleum & never had a problem!"
For a Saab turbo, HT/HS rating is the number one qualifier in terms of protection. Oil film strength will always be your first line of defense when it comes to keeping metal away from metal. Anti wear additives will always be your second line of defense. So, a more durable oil (better HT/HS) with a better additive package (more & better a/w additives) is what we're looking for. With the best of both HT/HS & a/w, Mobil 1 15W-50 (or Amsoil 20W-50) is the #1 protecting oil for a Saab turbo.
Of course, then we DO get into all the fuel economy & cold start & historical anecdote discussions (as well as one or two in the red herring category, like engine clearances). And some folks simply aren't comfortable using an oil "that thick" (another red herring!). That's fine. It's your car, & you gotta do what makes you comfortable 'cuz it's not worth losing sleep over. I use the #2 oil (by my own definition) simply 'cuz it stays in the '99 9³SE for at least a year (10k miles) & winter cold starts here can be at minus 10°F.
