Caspar,
Thanks for an interesting and informative post. Frankly, I don't dwell much on my 9-5's "theftability" since where I live (California), nobody is interested enough in Saabs to steal them (now Civics, Accords and Camrys are a different story). There's no market here for used Saab parts and there are cars far easier and more attractive to steal for transportation or export to foreign markets (the Russian "Mafia" seems to be getting into the car export business around here).
The 9-5 has to be considered pretty theft resistant given the alarm, disabling system, "chipped" key, free-spinning door lock, "married" stereo, etc.
Could it be that the British edition doesn't include all the antitheft goodies? I know, for example, that my friend's US market A4 didn't come with the chipped ignition key that's standard in other markets. But your quoted report brings up an interesting question, have thieves come up with a way to defeat that chip? (When BMW introduced theirs, US thefts plummeted to well under 100 that model year, and those stolen were mostly hauled off by tow trucks.)
