Brooks you the man!
Thanks.
I'm sitting here in the office on a Sunday catching up on a project and all I can think about is that damn tail light assembly :)
Now that I know that the panel is a dummy and the left is a fog (working) then that leaves all lights operational. The intermittent "brake light failure" message on my SID must be a weak bulb tripping the system. I find it odd that a dummy panel would have wiring and bulbs in place as is the case with the right taillight panel on the trunk of my 03...[perhaps to preserve the exterior appearance when inspecting close up?]
anyhow now to the good stuff...
Thank you for the very helpful explanation. This is my first Saab (ex Subaru owner) and Im still getting a handle on all the specs and exceptions to the model line. If you don't mind - I have a follow up which will help me understand your comments fully...
1- Per your post the chain that drives the cams is a replace it when it dies item. I looked over some posts and it appears they [chains] are supposed to last well over 100K. What happens when a timing chain fails?
2- I will check the serpentine belt tomorrow for the pulley configuration. I am trying to basically put together a list of things I should have replaced as preventative maintenance at 63K. I've read a lot of stories of belts/chains shredding apart (70-90K) to the tune of $3-$5K rebuild costs. I'd rather pay $700 now and know the car is good for another 60K miles rather than a couple of grand once shit hits the fan.
Is there anything I can replace now that will prevent a tensioner/chain from failing? I try to extract this from the search function on this page but not all are direct answers.
Thanks,
Tom
