European cars have always been known to have more electrical issues than others.. which is due in large with what you mentioned about leading technology..
on the other hand, VW for example, seems to have problems with areas that aren't exactly bleeding edge.. things like window motors, o2 sensors, ignition coil recall, etc.. are basic low tech systems.. so to me that is just a case of poor design and/or quality control...
I do think the japanese brands are right up there with their technology, just a different focus area as they tend to be fairly advanced with their engines for example, as opposed to the electronic gizmos we see in our European models. I think the bottom line is that Japanese do a slightly better job testing prior to release.. as many of their cars are on the roads in japan for a year or so, prior to being offered in the states..
