The right tires really help Posted by Caarl [Email] (#447) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Caarl) on Sun, 18 Dec 2005 23:07:38 In Reply to: Wow, '02 9-5 Aero is great in snow/ice!, Erik D, Sun, 18 Dec 2005 18:47:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Glad to hear it! We had a nice snow/ice storm here (Portland, OR) today and I tried out my `00 9-5 Aero with the Michelin Pilot HX MXM tires. Had the car since September and this was its first snow. The TCS did its best but I could barely make a slight hill (maybe 2% grade). About what I expected...these tires are NOT recommended for winter! Now, my old C900 cars with good winter tires (Semperits) would claw through anything that wasn't so deep that they'd start plowing. With studs, I could take steep hills with refrozen sheet ice that had SUVs spinning into the ditch (which of course is where you find a lot of SUVs in this weather). I expect the 9-5 with the right tires would do about the same.
Main lesson I learned early on: Don't let the front wheel drive get you over-confident. Too much confidence is what puts SUVs in the ditch, or into other cars. They're pulling them out all over town as I write.
BTW, this was my first test of TCS...I like it!
