Ask the owner for permission to take it to the delaer to have the check engine code checked out. It will likely cost you about 120 bucks but money well spent. My guess is that it is an O2 sensor. Not a big deal just make suure you get the right one for the car. I can't remeber what years that they change took place. I think the 99 and 2000 models take adifferent one. If i remeber correctly the 2001 o2 senors are a little cheaper.
If that is the issue you can get the proper one a eeuroparts.com. He also sells the timing belt and the tensioner. Do not change just the belt replace everything tesnioner nad idler. It is generally the thenioner that fails but with 180K all the timing components should be replaced. How much is he asking. I saw a dealer in Jersey is asking 3000 for one with 120k and a bad engine becuase someone undoubtedly waited too long to service the timming belt. Good Luck.
