Why I place no stock in Consumer Reports' car tests... 1) Consumer's Reports lists one of their guiding principals for vehicle ranking to not identify a vehicle as Best Buy in its first year of manufacture - makes sense to me. Yet they violated this tennant by awarding Toyota's first large pick-up a Best Buy award in its first year of manufacture! Their own rule! Hmmm......
2) The Pontiac Grand Am was a perrenial favorite, top seller, in its vehicle size class for years. Yet when CR did a special in-depth evaluation on this size of vehicle they did not include the Grand Am!?! Their reason was that not enough of their subscribers owned this particular model to have a significant sample. So they are deliberately EXCLUDING vehicles based on ownership by their subscribers, regardless of market penetration of the vehicle!?! Hmmm.....
3) The GEO Prizm and the Toyota Corolla were the same vehicle, built on the same assembly line, by the same workers. Yet they gave the Toyota a Best Buy recommendation and not for the GEO. Why? They didn't like the "feel" of the radio buttons on the GEO. Now this is a valid reason for an individual customer to select one model over the other, but not to reject awarding the Best Buy title on an identical car (radio button feel aside).
4) And the list goes on.........
And when was the last time anyone actually found an appliance model in a store that matched one of the models they tested? They always seem to report on discontinued merchandise.
