One of the most common overselling jobs is for the surpentine belt. Cracking of the grooved side is fairly normal and doesn't indicate replacement, although any cracking at all usually calls for a replacement recommentdation by a dealer and some indy's.
Nothing catastrophic about a serp belt failure, timing belt yes, and always replace the pulleys when doing a timing belt, but when a serp belt lets go it's just darn inconvienent. The pulleys usually talk to you so you know when they need replacing.
You can see it yourself with a flashlight. Again cracking in the grooves is fairly normal. Are there any missing groove segments or any shredding of either edge? Can you hear the pulleys? Some folks think belts and hoses are essential to maintenace and should be replaced periodiclly. I see their point, I'm just too cheap myself to do it that way.
