Hi! This is a really great forum, I'm learning a lot here.
I bought a 2001 9-5 2.3t, 50K miles, in January. Intermittently, it doesn't start. At first it was about once a week, and it would start again in a few minutes. Over a few weeks, it failed to start more often, up to about 10-15% of the time, and needed more time before it would start again. Once it wouldn't start for 4 hours afterwards, which I imagine is enough time for anything overheated to cool off. It always starts in the morning. When it sometimes doesn't start is after I drive and park. When it doesn't start, all the lights and panels work, but there is no crank. There is only a single soft click coming from what I presume is the relay under the dash. I replaced the battery - no difference. I also checked for loose fuses and relays. I took it to an indie, Saab Replay here in Berkeley, and they thought it was the ignition switch. They said there was no current to the starter when it wouldn't start. They replaced the switch. I've had the car back for a few days now and had no problems until today. It no-started on me again, but started after just 2 more tries. So replacing the ignition switch didn't fix the problem, but it did seem to ameliorate it.
Any ideas? I'm new to auto mechanics but am good with machines and electronics. I am guessing there is a bad contact or short in the wiring from the ignition switch to the starter. Replacing the ignition switch bumped the wiring which helped a bit but didn't solve the problem. Any better theories?
