I'm assuming 'no start' means 'no crank at all'...the range switch on top of the transmission can go intermittently bad and not give the right circuit close to de-interlock the starter. It sounds just like mine, the more heat soak the switch gets, the more likely it is not to crank. It would take anywhere from minutes to hours to cool off enough.
It was intermittent enough that it might happen to me 5 times a day but not when the mechanic had it.
On a hunch about the heat, I got it to turn over by actually icing the switch. Then to be sure, I installed a switch to jump the wires that gave the interlock signal, and if I had a no-crank, I'd flip that and it would start.
One other item applies to MY2000, the starter positive cable nut was loose, but I assume if your indie was in there checking voltage he probably gave it a turn to be sure.
