It's the half-disc shaped thing on top of the trans where the cable meets it (partially under the battery tray). I'll have to look up the pinouts.
Inside are a bunch of contacts with some grease, rowing it was supposed to help redistribute the grease but some eventually go bad; on the NG900 these also failed and caused a limp-home. Mine's degenrated to this point, although a trans limp-home on the 9-5 usually only requires a restart to clear.
It was possible to take apart and recondition the NG900 switch, although it barely paid to do so; the 9-5 switch seems to be riveted shut and replacement is probably the most effective fix.
