As real as it gets.....try 1999-2005... Ahhhhh, reality, a 9-5 is as real as it gets. A 9-5 does have the same themes, feel and look as a classic 900, lotsa' continuity there, that is until the 2006 mid cycle enhancement. So look at a 1999-2005 and as a classic 900 owner, you'll feel right at home.
If you're worried about a Saab 9-5 being "some crap-ass american make-over peice of junk" then you'll be pleased to know that a 9-5 is very traditioally Saab designed, uses few GM parts and none that you can see, and is built in Trollhattan.
The hard core Saab enthusiasts who have owned all the various Saab models, like me, are tickled silly with a 9-5. The real Saab deal, but none of the compromises required by previous Saabs. A 9-5 has world class performance, world class luxury, and most importantly world class reliabilty, the silver lining so to speak in 9-5 ownership, a car that competes with the best in reliability too. Even recent consumer magazines recommend a 9-5 for safety as well as realiability.
Now a 2006 9-5 has the newer interior styling themes found in 9-3SS and a fresh new look outside too, which is appealing to many real (there's that word again) Saab folks who maybe never owned a 900, but is still a real Trollhattan built Saab. That's why I recommend a 1999-2005 because after you've had a 9-5 for years and years you might be ready for a mild freshening with a better radio and climate controls and a new look to the exterior, while retaining the 9-5 feel and drive.
Meanwhile check out a 1999-2005 9-5, preferably a 2002-2005 Certified Pre Owned, or CPO Saab.
