It all depends on the car. Some people get lemons, and others get a car requiring almost no maintenance. It's that way with most cars. I had a 2001 9-5 V-6 that was a lemon. I had a 1997 900 SE that was awesome. My current 9-5 (99K miles) would be expensive on upkeep if I wasn't the mechanic. Labor charges are a pain in the butt and wallet.
Most of the work on it is just normal wear and tear maintenance. The DIC started to go, so I replaced it. It would have cost me almost that much to buy coils, wires and other associated ignition parts for an older car. It would have taken more than 2 minutes to replace on an older car, too. The problem with my car, is that everything is going at once! (CPS, Starter relay, PCV system, ACC Code 08, coolant bypass valve, turbo bypass valve, water pump, pulleys and belt, two engine mounts [one broken in two pieces], torque rod mount [probably broke due to busted engine mount], throttle body [Who knows, maybe I would have needed a new carburetor on an older car by now - about the same $$].)
Some unexpected maintenance has been the ABS Module ($2500 + labor) which I did for a lot less. I had bad motor mounts which created a terrible vibration in Drive and Reverse. Fog lights were breaking all the time until I made some plexi-glass protectors for them. I've had three bent rims as well.
My total in parts for the last year and a half adds up to a bit over $3000. Good thing I do my own work, eh?
