I find your coments funny to be honest... I mean I have absolutly no degree what so ever, but I have taken some engeneering classes and such, and to me it makes sence;
go to you local hole-in-the-wall Chineese/mexican place, find two straws of different diamiters, suck air through them (cuz that is what a turbo does, SUCK! haha...) you will be able to suck through the bigger one easier. Then cut the fat straw shorter, it will make it easier to breath through (less restrictive), now push the straw flat and cut a triangle off the very end of the straw, so when you make the straw round again, you have a C> looking thing off the end, it will make it even easier to breath through, now these might be minimal amounts, but just remember that the tubro sucks harder than you do, and the snorkal is much bigger than a straw.
Now as far as why the saab engeneers "designed it that way" they probably did not, they probably had some design close to that, and then since they don't make this part at the factory but some third party makes it, the put the contract up for bid.
Bid 1 will make the exact same part for 3 dollars,
but bid 2 will make it JUST a little different, but make it for 2.50. They go with bid 2. Hence not a "perfect" part, but a cheap one...
Like I said, no degree what so ever, but I do speak 4 languiges, and read/write two of those, if that counts for anything...
