We've got a 2001 9-5 sedan with 2.3lpt (manual transmission) that we bought new in November 2001. We now have 55,000 miles on it. A turbo was replaced under warranty and a wheel bearing was replaced under warranty. Otherwise it has been reliable and trouble-free, requiring only scheduled maintenance.

Around town our fuel economy is around 23-24 MPG, a trip last week with 190 miles on the freeway netted 34.1 MPG on the freeway, and an overall trip average of 30.4 MPG (including 3 days in the city I visited, plus the drives down and back on teh freeway for 190miles each way). We're quite happy with our fuel economy in the 9-5.

With dedicated snow tires, the 9-5 will do just fine for you in the snow. As we live in the Pacific NW, we rarely encounter snow. We did get several inches last winter, and did fine with the FWD car. Remember that the 9-5 was designed and built in Sweden, so designed to cope with (and excel at) winter driving.

The TCS will retard throttle or apply front-wheel brake depending on the situation. I believe it works a bit differently in 5-spd vs. automatic cars, though I can't remember how it differs.

I know that Saabs have terrible resale values. The 9-5 is the only Saab we've bought new, the other 3 have been used. A used saab in nice condition with it's service records is a great buy.
