I would say that the V6 is THE practical choice in 9-5s. It is immune from several of the pervasive issues of the LPT4s, particularly sludge. Also has a simpler serpentine belt arrangement, and is actually easier to work on - more space around the engine than in the 4s. Fuel economy is very similar, EPA ratings are only 1mpg less than the 4. I can easily get 29-30 highway with mine. And the V6 is sooo much smoother. And similar performance to a same-year Aero automatic without the Aero insurance penalty.
Personally, the sludge issues with the LPT4 are enough for me to not even consider buying one used.
