Too bad you bought a BMW, but if you wanted something different, then you had to leave Saab. As for why the domestics are suffering, I agree that the domestics may have lost some of their focus on the driver, but that doesn't explain why the Japanese vehicles have sold so well. The Camrys and Accords don't focus on the driver either as they are quite bland. I think it all comes down to the quality gap which was real and is now diminishing to the point that it is almost insignificant, (i.e. - best to worst difference is < 1 problem per hundred vehicles). But the perception gap remains and the press still chastises GM and Ford for every move they make. I find the Wall Street Journal and Consumer Reports to be very harsh. So the "suffering" continues.
If GM and Ford products were so bad, they wouldn't have near the sales or loyalty they do and businesses would definitely not buy them as fleet vehicles. Remember too that there are a lot more competitors than there used to be in the "old days", so share is very likely to go down now that consumers have more choice.
