I made the move from my 225hp '98 9000CSE 5-speed (demolished from the rear three weeks ago, with me in it) to an '02 Linear wagon 5-speed. And I had an '88 9000T before the '98.
I drove an '03 Aero wagon with automatic and it was a blast to drive, but I opted to settle down a bit, and end the need for premium fuel and odd-sized tires; I bought the more sedate Linear. I get my jollies on sportbikes, anyway.
The sound system was much better in the CSE, there was more interior width in the CSE, I could get two 40-gallon trash cans standing up in the back of the hatchback (but only one in the wagon). I like the 9-5 for all the reasons others have stated here, but I wish Detroit had allowed Trollhatten to evolve the 9000 concept, rather then handing them an existing platform shared with the Cadillac Catera.
My independent mechanic said the 9000 would always cost more to maintain, so it was coming to the point when I would have to find a replacement, but the choice was foisted upon me by a speeding pick-up from the rear. I am not disappointed in the 9-5, but I miss having a dozen maps in each door pocket, and the 9-5 seats do not compare to the 9000 seats, not by a long shot.
Now, how is the windshield glass lasting in the 9-5? In two 9000s, I replaced glass every 100,000 miles just because of the pitting.
