I went from a '97 9000 CSE (200HP, AT)to an '01 9-5 Linear Sedan (170HP, MT) and then to my current '04 9-5 Arc sedan (220HP, AT).

My thoughts:

I loved the style and utility of the hatchback. The 9-5 has a nice trunk and the seats fold down, but the space is still less usable. If I were buying a 9-5 now, I'd opt for the wagon and probably an Aero.

The 9-5s are quieter -- less engine noise, less wind noise, less tire noise (though still not a quiet as the competitiom). The ACC in the 9-5 is also quieter -- though on higher fan speeds, the system still sounds like it was "born from jets"

The 9-5 suspension absorbs road irregularities better... at the expense of being "floaty" ... but steering response is about the same.

The "fits and finishes" and ergonomics of the 9-5 interior are better than 9000s, but the quality of materials is not as good... in particular the quality of the leather.

In my experience, overall reliability and durability is about the same.

BUT...

I loved my 9000 and I genuinely looked forward to driving it every time I got in it. It felt "special" from the day I bought it until I sold it with 190,000 miles on the clock. It felt like it was designed and built by a bunch of Swedish "car guys" who lived to drive. It was also one of those rare cars that almost becomes part of the family -- and my wife and kids all felt the same way. And the "quirks" like no glove compartment didn't bother me a bit.

I like the 9-5... and I like my 2004 better than my 2001... but when I had my 9000, it took three years before the thought about replacing it even crossed my mind. With the 9-5, I started thinking about my next car after a few months.

Maybe I would feel different if I had bought the Aero?
