Sure, why not?
Was driving my teenage daughter to school in my Aero.
She said to me, "for my first car can you get me a convertible?"
I replied, "you are riding in your first car."
Silence.
Then finally she said, "well, can we at least get it painted silver."
I think the key is to make sure they have lots supervised time behind the wheel. Also, once they start driving on their own, restrict the number of passengers that they can carry to reduce distractions. And, of course, prohibit the use of cell phones, ipods etc. when they are behind the wheel.
