Mikey,
No parent is. Lots of seat time before they get their own wheels is important. We did 15 hours before she hit drivers ed, then kept it going with my wife or me in additon to DE. I used to take her to the high school parking lot, set up cones in different patterns and have her run them at about 20 mph, turn and brake into a box, do a slalom, stuff like that to build a sense fo feel and control. I put her on snow/ice to feel the ABS and steer while it was hammering away. I had her do running commentaries of what was happening while she drove on the road, track her following distance, get her to think about something more than just holding the wheel. Biggest problem was getting her not to weave, which is getting about looking further ahead. It all worked and I don't worry *too* much anymore. Still not quite sure she's ready to do the 3.5 hour run to her college solo, but that'll come.
We waited a year from when she was legal to when she actually got her license. I think this is helpful for some kids. Then she started driving the car a month or so later.
In the driving contract I wrote up we specified it is MY car and she gets to use it. It doesn't even become hers at some point --that's a future negotiation. She paid about half the insurance and all the gas while she was home. And the deal is if she gets a ticket I take her license in addition to what the state does. And she pays the insurance surcharge. And I actually followed her a couple of times without her knowing. She seems to behave.
Still, this is one of the scary parts of parenting.
