...nor do you need a new Saab. There is a well-documented DIY procedure for installing a hardwired AUX in (elsewhere). It's actually pretty easy, but requires a soldering iron and some skill/precision. I did this shortly after I bought my '03 Aero Wagon and it sounds every bit as good as the built-in CD player. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll pull together some more info.
That said, I'm really excited about this TrollPod thing. The big advantage I see is that it interfaces with the steering wheel controls and provides track info on the SID. If all you want is an AUX in, save your $175 and do the above-mentioned procedure. At one point I was considering doing exactly what TrollPod is doing to get the steering wheel controls.
Theoretically, it shouldn't be very difficult to use a microcontroller to interface with the bus. As mentioned by others, the communications protocol information is already documented on the internet. In practice, as many of you have recognized, getting this to work reliably for a marketable product (beyond the prototype tinkering stage) would be very time consuming. I was actually quite surprised at his price. If the price is legit, either he's planning on basically giving them away or selling tens of thousands of units. Neither of these seem very likely to me. If I was doing the same thing, I'd probably be shooting for a $400-500 sticker price - and I wouldn't be making money hand over fist. Custom, low-volume products are just expensive to make.
I wish TrollPod all the best of luck and hope that they can get this to market for a profit so everyone here can get one. In my opinion, this is the wrong way to go about developing something like this. I would never expect to be able to make much (if any) money at it, so I'd make it an open source project.
