There are many of us that go back a few years that cringe to think of Saab's traditional values being compatible with today's notions of "high end" (including decorative wood, fake or otherwise), and it is one of the reasons for all the misgivings back when Saab was absorbed by GM. We were attracted to Saabs back in the 60's and 70's because they were innovative, thoughtfully engineered, independent, and represented clean, Swedish design that dared to be different from the ostentatious offerings from the American automakers. Things like front wheel drive, powerful but economical turbocharged engines, electronic ignition, responsive steering and handling, hatchbacks, sensible size, logical (but different) ergonomics, and handsome CLEAN interiors were fascinating and even a little exiting. We knew Saabs were not for everyone but most of us simply didn't care. You will soon have your up-market Saab in 2008 or so, but I for one am saddened, not happy, about Saab attempting to be just another member of the Audi/BMW/Lexus gang. And all things considered, GM is probably correct. Ultimately there may not be a big enough market today for a car that dares to be innovative and different.
