I had a similar experience with a dealer recently, trying to buy a CPO '04 Arc wagon. They've had it on their lot the last two months, starting at $23k, now down to $22k. I offered them $20k cash 6 weeks ago, and called weekly right up until last Friday still willing to do the deal. They wouldn't budge. I expect that eventually it will still be on their lot, selling for $20k, or maybe less once all the '04 leases start pouring back in. I told them as much, saying that it was a shame that they couldn't match a good car with a fair offer. Didn't seem to care.
Instead I bought an '03 Aero (post and pictures later this week) from a private party for $16.5k. I would have loved the assurance of a CPO, but not for that kind of change.
Happy hunting.
