There's not a lot the shop would see during a sevice visit that would clue him in to a pending turbo failure. About the only maintenance you can do to prolong the life of your turbo is frequent oil changes with (preferably) synthetic oil.
Others may disagree, but turbos typically fail suddenly. Some have reported a whining sound, others talk about puffs of blue smoke on start up. Mine failed at 96K miles without any obvious warning. Come to think of it, there weren't any subtle signs either.
I've had my car since 2002. Except for that turbo failure, and belt knocking out my oil cooling lines last year, virtually all my other Saab expenses have been for relatively minor issues -blower motors, service theft alarm messages, pixel problems, etc... Everything else falls into the category of normal maintenance.
