Well, they tried to save you some $$$, but dropped the ball by missing the swamp in back. My 1999 M/T has just about 120K and the clutch is still dandy, so we're both lucky there. $1000+ sounds steep for the work they actually did, but not outrageous. My dealer's hourly rate these days is $88.
Sounds like you're annoyed because you had to go back twice and were inconvenienced and had your time wasted by the lack of a loaner. Don't blame you. I stopped going to one dealer when every minor repair took two trips to get right.
But it sounds like this dealer isn't trying to rip you off; they're just not great at service. I'd tell the service mgr, using a reasonable tone, that this wasn't a good experience for you and ask what could have been done to make the repairs more efficiently. Listen to what he has to say and go from there.
I took a 9000 to a dealer years ago with a complaint of eau de coolant scent in the cabin. He phoned me, said he replaced a hose for cheap, and said the only time that was an expensive problem was when the passenger floor mat was wet. That means, he said, the coolant is dripping on the car's computer. But it is wet, I rejoined, just pick up the rubber mat. He put the phone down, came back and announced that he'd have to keep the car awhile longer and I'd have to bring a bigger check.
I think Saab is a car that requires an active, interested, reasonably informed owner. Being hard to discourage sometimes helps, too.
