Here's my FWIW-- My strategy the last several times I added to the family fleet is to contact dealers on the Internet, saying I didn't have time to make the rounds, and asking for the lowest price they'd accept for the car I wanted. Then I'd take the low bid. No trade in.

Instead, I keep the car that would have been a trade (fortunately, I haven't had problems with old Saabs, just new ones under warranty) and then I'd sell (or give to a family member) the car that had been our second car. This has enabled us to keep a fresh car in the fleet while getting max use out of paid for, well-maintained, perfectly servicable vehicles. My daughter the marketing major informs me Dad is using classic "value consumer" strategy.

I've found Saab dealers who give the best new car prices try to make the money back on the trade. C'est la vie.

IMHO, Saab is a perfect vehicle for the strategy, because many buyers look at the 9-5 and think, "It's the same as the '99 'cept for odd headlights." This attitude tends to keep prices of new 9-5s very attractive.

Of course, I haven't had significant mechanical problems with out-of-warranty Saabs. One of my '99 9-5s just had its 120K service to the tune of $700. But that's just two new car payments, so I'm not fretting about it. If monthly repais on a paid for car began to creep up toward new car payment territory, I'd replace. Otherwise, I'm good to go. And just in case, the family fleet also includes a Honda.
