The high mileage will kill the resale. But since you know the car and the history you are WAY ahead. FWIW, I bought my '99 9-5 4 years ago w/approx 80k miles on it for almost $5k less than anything other 9-5 I could find with 35-50k on it, WITH a winter set of wheel/tires in NEAR MINT condition. In fact, it had almost all highway miles, and was in MUCH better shape that most of the lower mileage cars I looked at.
The car had winter mats and several other nice touches and was owned by a board member who was really great with it. He couldn't find any takers. It was a good deal for both of us. Due to other reasons, it has only low miles over the last couple of years, but is up to 147K. He pointed out that even if I drove it to zero value, I'd still have less depreciation than he was taking on it. At this point the car is only worth a few thousand, but my total depreciation hit is about 50-60% less than he took over the same time period.
If you need to have a change, why don't you think about something in the nordic upgrade area with the heavier aero sway bars. I think that just the savings on the sales tax and difference in excise tax in the first year would pay for those changes, and you wouldn't be on another payment schedule. It WILL feel like a different car! Put some of the savings aside for maintence!
IIRC, MA taxes a used 2007 at .8 x $25/thousand of the original MSRP. It REALLY hurts on a car like the saab that has a really inflated sticker compared to what the real sale numbers are. Your 2004 is about to be discounted to the .1 x $25/thousand MSRP rate! Besides, what did you originally pay for the '04?
Good luck w/the choices!
