235/45/17 or 215/50/17?

Okay, so I'm getting new tires for my 2002 Aero wagon. Tried 225/50/17 but they rub with only me in the car, can't imagine what it'd be like loaded! Sent them back. Now, my goal is to run a little more sidewall to protect the wheels from getting bent. People say 235/45/17s give you more sidewall, but I'm still concerned about rubbing. What I'm thinking of doing is going with 215/50/17s, even though they're not as wide and not perfect for the car.
My question I guess boils down to will 235/45/17s actually give me more sidewall and will they rub or should I just go with 215/50/17s?
Thanks,
Andrew In DE
