Andrew:
Thanks for the clarification in your last post. It was not clear that you wanted to stay with 17" wheels.
Saab has supported use of 225/45 on 17" wheels, and for MY 2006-2008 235/45 on 17" wheels. A higher tire like a 50 or higher needs more room in the wheel well. I know of no engineering or test data that confirms that a higher tire would work without some problems. This means that you're left to your own efforts to test and evaluate.
I will tell you that pre-006 Aero's came with a 7" wheel width and 225 tires. 2006-2008 Aero's have a 7.5" wheel width and 235 tires. I can't tell you the consequences of putting 235 tires on 7" wheels.
I'm now on my second 9-5 Aero and 285K miles of experience. Within that I've always stuck with Saab's guidelines.
