Cleaning the Intercooler?

If all goes well I should be picking up my '01 9-5 V6 after 2 weeks at the shop with the turbo out to be rebuilt this weekend. After having puffs of blue smoke on startup for a year and eventually enormous clouds after acceleration I decided to cough up the money and rebuild it.
Anyway, I've read that oil builds up in the intercooler and takes a long time to get out once the leak from the turbo has stopped. Has anyone ever rigged something with the intercooler in the car to clean it out? I was thinking about taking the air ducts off either side of it and making an adapter to attach my garden hose to one side. Then plug the other side, let if fill up, and then let it drain a few times. Then maybe stick my wet-dry vac on and suck whatever's left out. A little water won't hurt anything going into the engine anyway, right?
Has anyone ever done this, and is it safe? I don't even know if I can get to it as I don't have my car to look at right now. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
