with your alternator idea- that's the classic rip-off fix for a dead battery- alternator, battery, starter, maybe $1500.The battery replacement is a $70 DIY. Also remove, clean the terminals with awire brush (inside the clamp, around the posts) apply vaseline and reconnect. Check the cable to the starter, the ground and the alternator- all deteroriate (loosen, corrode a bit). All cheap fixes, as cleaning, tightening involve no parts.
And NEVER try to start your car when the battery is low with lights, radio on. Everything goes off first.
That click is the classic symptom of a drained battery-- bad connections. It's the solenoid activating, but the juice isn't sufficient to turn the starter. By using the radio and itnerior lights with the car off, you ran the battery down.
If you mention alternator to a slightly greedy shop, take a check for $1500 with you.
