I've drive nothing but manual Saab's for 40 years. The automatics I tried did not impress me.
In 2004 my wife got a 9-5 ARC with automatic. She's had other automatic Saab's. This one (the 2004 9-5 ARC) impressed me. It was good....performed well and got 34 MPG on trips.
This past August I bought a new 2007 9-5 Aero.....yup, you guessed it...with automatic. The performance and ordinary day-to-day driving is great; the economy is pretty good (32 MPG on the open road).
So...IMHO...I would go the automatic route. Saab's automatics are good; they're made in Japan (Aisan LTD). Further, they have a reputation for better durability than the manual box.
