I've always driven manual-tranny Saabs, and my wife's driven the autos. In heavy traffic, the manual is sometimes a bit of a pain, but here in upstate NY, there isn't much in the way of traffic most of the time. In bad winter weather, though, I think the manual is much better. The traction control and the W (winter) switch on the auto are good for taking off from a stop, but when it comes to slowing down, there's just no substitute for the 5-speed, I think. I always feel more confident driving my 5-speed Aero in heavy snow than I do with the auto. I dunno whether a 5-speed ARC or an auto ARC is quicker, but they all seem adequately responsive to me. The Aero, of course, is "more responsive!"
