It's interesting to look at the edmunds consumer ratings and reviews. In 1999 everyone hated the 9-5, soo many problems. As you get newer and newer the ratings increase substantially. By 2004 there were almost no reported problems or frequent repairs. By 2004/5 there are no more PCV, headbolt, or DIC problems. Did I read your post too fast or did you forget to mention the mileage on the wagon you're considering. That price is EXTREMELY high, even with few miles on it. You could get a new one for 27k! I do agree they're ugly and would never buy one of those though. You should be able to find a decent 2005 Arc wagon for around 20k, maybe even less. It might be worth looking at the Aero, too. You get many more bells and whistles. My favorites are the extra 30hp and the sport seats. What kind of Audi is she coming from?
