Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, but aren't you guys talking about direct injection for DIESEL engines? That exists and is proven to offer huge advantages, but I'm not aware of any manufacturer with such a system working on a 4-stroke petrol engine. At most you have 'shower' injectors above individual throttle bodies. In a typical 4V head, with a central injector, where does the spark plug go? I'm sure people are working on it but I don't think it's reality yet.
If that is indeed the case, it proves why this obsession with something being 'outdated' is so common (even if the thing basically fine). People hear about this that or the other, and suddenly NEED to have it, even if they have no idea what "it' is.
Basically the only thing that sucks about a Saab I4 engine is the NVH at idle or just off-idle, otherwise they are great - heaps of power and great economy. Look at the new V6's in the 9-3 - no more power than the I4 and worse fuel economy (in a lighter car). Progress?
Cheers
Steve
