A compression test would be how you'd tell if you've got valve problems, although if it runs fine and just ticks it's probably not a valve. It would run real rough and you wouldn't get compression on one or more cylinders with a valve problem. I would take the camshaft cover off though to check for sludge. You said you were consuming oil. Do you know why? Usually they leak with head gasket problems, oil cooler problems, etc... But none of these would lead to such a sudden loss like you reported.
