The incessant foggy windows and the smell usually point to a cracked/failed heater core. I know - I just sold my '98 CSE and had replaced the heater core about a month ago, with those exact symptoms. It is a possible DIY, but from what I understand it is a bitch of a job and time-consuming. Maybe this will factor into your decision. I sold my CSE with 120K after a string of failures - water pump, fuel pump, heater core - reached the limit of my patience. I instead bought a 2004 9-5 Arc with a CPO warranty until 8/10. For what it's worth, the 9000 has better handling characteristics (more planted and dialed in) and better steering (9-5 is overboosted). Engine power is a wash, both are powerful. The 9-5's interior is superior, but you give up the 9000's versatility. Tough call. My decision was driven by the need for reliability. Durability - will the 9-5 last 250K? - is another matter altogether. Good luck with your decision.
