If you have the time and inclination to fix the car yourself, and have the skill to do so, then CPO probably doesn't make sense. These cars won't suffer catastrophic failures, so if you can replace struts, throttle bodies, control arm bushings, etc. yourself, then paying for a warranty is a waste of money.
I normally buy old cars w/o warranties and do some of the work myself(previous two cars were a 9000 and a 528i), but having had my first child in the past year, I can't imagine wasting my time spending part of a weekend replacing the struts instead of going to the zoo. I have an excellent dealer 10 minutes from my home, so it's easy. And, I feel that I made the right choice from an economic standpoint because I have without question had well over $3000 in repairs, whether you calculate the cost of dealer repair, my great indy at $85/hr or the value of my time in doing the work myself.
Everyone's situation is different. If you have the free time to spend a Saturday on a creeper, then CPO is a waste. Otherwise, I think Saab's program is one of the industry's best and worth the extra cost. Don't blame me though if your car is trouble free for two years!
