Did cleaning the rad actually help? Did it run cooler? Was the temp spike at shut off lower? If so it sure seems that your rad is partially plugged.
you might consider another, very through, flush (I really like the prestone "back flush tee" ... costs about $10 at walmart and does a very good job of back flushing the rad). You might also consider replacing the rad.
That said, 175k & 7 years on a tstat means you are living on borrowed time. However, unlike the old days with the 900, the most common failure mode of the tstat these days is for it to fail open.
