At least we can disable the DRL's on our 9-5's. I can't disable them easily (maybe not at all) on my wife's 9-3SC. It requires a cooperative and understanding Technician with a Tech-II device, and the factory installation of a Body System Software version which will permit the change.

About the unused dash openings......

They have always been there. I don't know if there are enough options, even globally, to justify all of them. OnStar fills one opening in the US. Adjustable headlight levelers fill another in some markets. I think many are there as "What if's", just to have an opening available IF a new option is invented and offered.
