I reviewed the Head Injury Criterion (HIC) results for the 9-3SS / 9-3SC with side curtain airbags. As I understand it, the HIC measures lateral acceleration of the head after an impact based on results from an accelerometer mounted at the CG of the test dummy's head. In other words, it's a measure of the initial dynamic movement of the head, not a measure of the deceleration of the head as it impacts the side curtain airbag or the glass, etc.
From Wikipedia, 'The HIC includes the effects of head acceleration and the duration of the acceleration. Large accelerations may be tolerated for very short times... At a HIC of 1000, one in six people will suffer a life-threatening injury to their brain (more accurately, an 18% probability of a severe head injury, a 55% probability of a serious injury and a 90% probability of a moderate head injury to the average adult).'
From the NHTSA's side crash results, the 9-3SS has a rear seat 4-star rating but a HIC of 717 while the front seat has a 5-star rating and a HIC of 232. Is the back seat that much more dangerous than the front seat? Compare those HIC numbers to the 9-5 which comes in at 126 front / 334 rear, or even the Saturn Aura which comes in at 72 front / 495 rear (all three vehicles within a few hundred pounds of each other).
I know there many things go into car safety (handling, accident avoidance, etc.) but if you do get broadsided, is the rear seat in a 9-3SS/SC 'unsafe' even with the side air bags? Do I bag the 9-3 and move to a 9-5 even though it doesn't have rear side curtain airbags?
